Welcome to the final section of the Master Your Messaging Intro!

If you’re anything like me, you might be skeptical of how your mental game impacts your messaging, your ability to go through this program, and your business. For years, I was the woman who told coaches “I don’t need any mindset work. I just need you to tell me what to do!” but the truth was, until I recognized that I already knew what to do but I WASN’T DOING IT, I stayed stuck. And once I realized how much resistance I felt to doing the things that would move the needle in my business and then took active steps to work through the underlying fears, I started seeing growth in leaps and bounds.

In your case, you may find that though you WANT to work on this program, you’ll make a million excuses not to do so. Or, you’ll feel this sense of dread every time you think about logging in, opening your computer, or sending me your workbook. That’s resistance.

Resistance, as I alluded to earlier, is often caused by an underlying fear, and when you’re trying something new, like mastering your messaging, fear is really common! Fear is a normal response by your brain to keep you from getting hurt when you’re doing something new or different. And fear isn’t bad! But letting fear run the show can keep you from doing the work you need to in this program and business.

So let’s talk through what to do when you feel resistance.

First off, understand that resistance shows up in lots of different ways, not just in feeling dread or making excuses. A few ways resistance might show up during this program:

Blocking off time on your calendar to work on the program but then ignoring the notification when it pings.
Obsessing over the price point of your offer, or whether it’s a 10-week or 12-week program, or over other small details that don’t really impact whether or not it will sell.
Letting other tasks take priority over doing the work in this program, when they’re not a true priority.
Skipping through lessons or modules or skipping questions in the workbook because they’re too hard or too easy.
Getting hung up on one of the questions and letting it keep you from moving forward.
Aiming for perfection!
Finding something about me and my delivery of the program to pick apart and use as a reason to not continue with the program.
Hesitating to submit your workbook to me because it’s not “good enough” yet (even though the whole point of this program is let me help you and guide you).

And I’m sure there are tons of other ways.

Now, this isn’t to say that every time you prioritize something else over this program, it’s resistance. Real obstacles absolutely do come up!

Maybe you or a family member get sick or your internet really does crash for a couple of days. That’s just life, and I definitely understand that LIFE HAPPENS, even with the best-laid plans.

The other truth is that you might be dealing with some real trauma responses, brain quirks (AKA neurodiversity), or mental health struggles that make doing this work extra difficult.

(And if you realize at any point along the way that there’s something more serious going on than run-of-the-mill procrastination, please find a counselor, coach, or other professional who specializes in one of those things. I believe every entrepreneur should have a mindset coach, therapist, or other trusted professional to guide them through these more serious conditions.)

But, if you find yourself avoiding this work consistently, or spending multiple hours trying to answer the questions from one lesson, you might be up against some resistance.

So what do you do when resistance strikes?

It may sound counterintuitive, but don’t ignore it! That resistance is there to serve a purpose (even if your brain is a bit misguided in thinking that learning how to write marketing content is the equivalent to jumping into a frigid swimming hole!), and if you try to stuff the feeling or ignore it, chances are it will come back later even stronger.

Instead, you want to acknowledge the resistance. Have compassion for the part of you that is scared to try something new, and let yourself feel that icky feeling for a bit.

Then, get curious. Ask yourself why you feel this way. What are you afraid of? What is your brain trying to keep you from experiencing?

And then, you can take some steps to reassure yourself that you’ll be OK.

The practical work through this process will look wildly different for you than for me. At different points in my journey, I’ve used talk therapy (with a trusted friend, a therapist, or a coach), journaling, meditation, prayer, and intentional movement to work through my resistance. You might find that tapping, breathwork, or other embodiment exercises work better for you.

You may have to experiment to find the method that is best for you, so don’t give up if, after one journaling session, you still find yourself procrastinating on doing this work.

In the workbook for this program, you’ll find two things that may be helpful for you - a place to jot down your most common patterns of resistance & ideas for what you can do to work through it, and some of my favorite journaling prompts. By taking some time now to acknowledge that resistance will occur and make yourself aware of your most common resistance patterns, you’re one step ahead of the game in softening your resistance and working through it when it arises.

Then, you can use the journaling prompts to help you work through some deeper resistance that might be keeping you stuck.

And I ask you to give yourself some grace. Know that resistance is TOTALLY NORMAL on the entrepreneurship journey, and feeling resistance or experiencing procrastination in some way does not mean that you’re not cut out to be a coach or business owner. So please don’t let the resistance keep you from completing the work in this course.

I’m going to ask you to pause the video here and take just a couple of minutes to jot down how resistance most commonly comes up for you, and then one or two ideas of how you can work through that resistance. You’ll find these prompts under the Introduction section of the workbook, in the sections titled “Resistance is Real” and “Journaling Prompts.”***
